Next Steps

There are certain steps in a person's spiritual journey we expect every person to strive toward here at Baytown's First Baptist Church. When a person turns from their sins to Jesus and is saved, we rejoice. However, our work as a church is just beginning. We want to raise that person up to be a fully devoted follower of Jesus, or a "disciple who makes disciples." Jesus didn't say, "Have an altar call and you're done." He said, "Make disciples." Our church is committed to this disciple-making process. While each step in a person's spiritual journey is taken deep within the heart, these key steps are essential in your journey at this church and to following Christ.

Once you have accepted Christ in your life the next and first step in obedience to Jesus Christ is to go and be baptized. Jesus did it, Paul did it, and every follower of Jesus did in the Bible. Baptism is a picture of what Jesus did for us. It symbolizes His death, burial, and resurrection. He has commanded those who follow him to be baptized. It is not necessary for salvation, but necessary for obedience. It is a public profession of faith that I have accepted Jesus Christ in my life.

"...those who believed and accepted his message were baptized." -Acts 2:41

"...having been buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through your faith in the working of God, who raised him from the dead." -Colossians 2:12

"We were, therefore, buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with him like thi in his death, we will certainly also be united with him in his resurrection." -Romans 6:4-5

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. -Matthew 28:19-20

Another step in your spiritual journey is to be committed to attending the corporate gathering of the church in worship. Bottom line, if you're a fully devoted and committed follower of Christ, you go to church.

"Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching." -Hebrews 10:23-25

"But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship him." -John 4:23

"And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus." -Acts 5:42

We believe every follower of Christ should be committed to a local church family. Anyone can attend a service, but membership means that a person is committed to the vision of the church by giving and serving.

"Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms." -1 Peter 4:10

"And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need." -Acts 2:45

"Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." -2 Cor. 9:7

"In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead." -James 2:17

Connected & Growing

Spiritual growth happens as we build relationships with others, study God's Word, and experience life together. Home Groups or Life Groups provide a comfortable environment to do all three.

And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. -Acts 2:42

"And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they did not cease teaching and preaching that the Christ is Jesus." -Acts 5:42

"Iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another." -Proverbs 27:17

As followers of Christ, we are called to share the good news of Christ to the ends of the earth. The message of Jesus is not meant to stay in one place, but to be taken outside the walls of the church to the community and the world. .

"Be wise in the way you act toward outsiders; make the most of every opportunity." -Colossians 4:5

"Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations..." -Matthew 28:19

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8)

This essential step can happen anytime, anywhere. It's where someone helps another take a step that they have taken. For instance, if you're attending worship services, invite someone else to attend with you. If you're in a Small Group, invite someone else to attend. If you're leading a Small Group, show someone else how. If you're on a Ministry Team, invite someone to serve with you. We want our people to "make disciples who make disciples." We are called to multiply God's kingdom by making disciples and mentoring others.

"And he said to them, 'Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.'" -Matthew 4:19

"And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also." -2 Timothy 2:2
